The Sister Friend Program

Every teen or woman who enrolls in the project is offered a Sister Friend (community volunteer). Sister Friends provide one-on-one friendship and emotional support to help her identify and stay in prenatal care, access other resources, and understand how to be a good parent. Sister Friends are usually there when the baby is born and continue in this expanded family-type relationship until the child is a year old.

As one of The Birthing Project's Sister Friends you will:

  • Help your "little sister" find community resources
  • Provide education and support to your sister during and after pregnancy with the guidance of The Birthing Project
  • Keep records of all your little sister's prenatal and well-baby appointments
  • Help your little sister with the transition back to school or work
  • Teach your little sister how to advocate for herself and to make plans for herself, her baby, and her future.
  • Continue in the role of older sister for as long as you and your little sister both agree to maintain this special relationship
  • Gather monthly with other Sister Friends for support!
